What have the Romans ever done for Manchester

Potted history of this great city; The Romans built a fort on a plateau about 1 mile south of the present Manchester cathedral in 80 AD called Mamuciam probably because the plateau resembled a breast. The fort was rebuilt in stone about 200 AD with a thriving civilian settlement clustered around the perimeter walls

At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 a village called Mamecester existed. In time the name changed to Manchester

Fast forward to the time of the Normans in the 11th century Manchester was a small village, in the 12th century the population of England grew and trade and commerce contributed to make Manchester into a town in the early 13th century.

In 1603 Manchester suffered an outbreak of plague, which killed approximately a quarter of the population

In the 17th century Manchester was famous for wool and silk

In the early 18th century Manchester had a population of around 10,000. It was still a medium sized town. However in the late 18th century the industrial revolution began and the population soared to 70,000

During the 19th century Manchester was transformed by the Industrial Revolution. The population of Manchester grew to 126,000 and became world famous as a manufacturing centre producing wool, silk, cotton, paper and iron

In the 20th century diversification produced new industries included flour milling, biscuits and breakfast cereals. The old industries of cotton, silk and Engineering suffered during the depression of the 1930s. In the second half of the century manufacturing industries declined and have been supplemented by service industries – education, finance, tourism, digital and creative

Through history manufacturing, craft and trade have made the city what it is today.  A vibrant cosmopolitan thrusting metropolis, the UK’s undisputed second city. So when John Cleese said ‘’what have the Romans ever done for us except sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation,  roads, the fresh water system and public health’’ add M A N C H E S T E R.

Select Interiors design, manufacture and produce genuine made in Manchester merchandise in the form of well thought out, bespoke interiors fitted by experienced craftsmen. We utilise some of the tools also used by the Romans, chisels, hammers, saws though the skilled carpenters don’t usually wear togas during the working week except perhaps Big Dave a member of the team that enjoys dressing up….

We at Select Interiors judge the success of the buildings and places we design by the way people use and enjoy them – the clients who commission them, the people who inhabit them. Good design is about helping clients meet their needs and objectives. It is also about the way people feel when they experience it, a sense of meaning, connection and belonging.
