The days of highly structured formal densely packed people factories with strong hierarchies and corporate monoculture are thankfully coming to an end.
The last decade has also brought about significant changes in the physical spaces many office workers inhabit. Only 5 – 7 years ago most office workers remained static, bound to their office and desk, simply because the phones and computers to do their job were fixed in one place. Laptop computers, tablets, and smart phones have enabled significant opportunities to change the way offices are designed, planned and therefore used.
Typically, the rising cost of office space has engendered the open plan model with a high density of workstations to maximise value with more intensive occupancy sqft.
As human capital for most companies is the largest expense it makes sense to research the socioemotional impact of staff associated with these environments.

The research, assessing the extent to which employees shared their office space with others, along with demands comprising of distractions, uncooperative behaviours, distrust, negative relationships, resources from co-worker friendships and supervisor support. The resulting
Data suggests that, as work environments become more shared & open plan (with hot-desking / agile workspaces being the current trend and the extreme), not only was there an increase in demands, but co-worker friendships were not necessarily improved and perceptions of supervisory support decreased.
In conclusion one of the main factors employee well-being in shared / open plan works environments is the distraction by noise and loss of privacy. In hot / agile spaces the lack of certainty and personalised desk space was cited as detrimental to well-being

The generally accepted main advantages of exclusively Co-worker spaces as follows;
- ease of interaction,
- projecting image of being modern and forward thinking,
- improved flexibility in the use of the physical space,
- closer working relationships,
- higher productivity,
- more easily exchanged knowledge / skills
- increased networking opportunities
The advantages of Co-worker spaces were offset by the negative impact of noise, loss of privacy, lack of certainty and personalised desk space
Design scheme for Traklabs a global incubator & investor in start-ups businesses. The Select Interiors space plan incorporated high table hot desking / agile spaces and an informal meeting booth within the more traditional layout
At Select Interiors Ltd Manchester design & fit out company we strive to ‘design in’ Co-worker style spaces within the open plan model to amalgamate the advantages. We to try to balance the needs of company revenue returns per sqft against the less tangible return of staff wellbeing within the design process.
We always try to incorporate acoustic treatments within office spaces subject to budget. It may be just the use of acoustic desk screens; we like to include ceiling mounted systems. We also incorporate acoustic plasterboards and acoustic insulation as standard within our partitions. We aim to improve acoustics and give personal division of space to ameliorate the negatives as highlighted in the report.

Space plan by Select Interiors Ltd for Mediacom in Spinningfields Manchester to accommodate additional staff and increase value per sqft by creative space planning. The executive office below was created where a former storage area was located. We dismantled the storage, took all the items to storage and built this cool office for Finance Director Erica
The work at Mediacom in Spinningfields included radial floating bulkheads with concealed Led lighting, spiral ductwork with diffusers sprayed to compliment the colour scheme. Radial seamless glass partitions, power, data and flooring. The creative re-alignment of partitions and storage area to accommodate an additional 8 staff and the executive office above to squeeze value per sqft for Mediacom
The above area was converted by Select Interiors Manchester, from a closed fixed screened executive space (5 desks) into an office comfortably accommodating 20 staff. With adjacent Kitchen / Staff breakout, access to top floor balcony and informal meeting booths and boardroom is a self-contained creative hub for the new media team
Select Interiors Manchester completed the full demolition and fit out of the ground and 4th floors to create an additional 23 number staff and an executive office for Finance Director squeezing best valued out of the available space. The works were completed over an eight-week programme whilst the office was live by phasing the works incorporating weekends to complete the messy demolition phases

Scope of works include full design and submission of drawings to Building Control and for Landlord’s approval. Select Interiors space planning and fit out services plan layout for rationalisation of space for international recruitment company Airswift Technology Ltd
As existing plan for Airswift an executive international recruitment company with over 50 offices worldwide and 800 staff. Select Interiors have recently completed a full strip out of an under-utilised space to give back to Landlord Bruntwood Estates to generate some income. Select Interiors then refurbished another under-utilised wing to create space for 66 staff to include a second Boardroom and meeting room. Select Interiors re-used all the desks, storage, glazed screens and retractable concertina doors. The re-used screens were used to form new executive board and meeting room within the executive office space off reception.

Select Interiors have been invited to re-design the whole office after completion of the scheme above in which we used all the existing furniture, glazing and concertina doors from another wing of the building.

The scheme is to transform the under-utilised space into a collaboration and informal meeting area to serve the 126 staff after a post 1st phase of contract meeting between the Managing Director, Finance Director and Carl & Umair Select Interiors were awarded further works to include the space above
Select Interiors presented their ergonomic design to encourage movement and a slight change of culture with the emphasis on staff wellbeing
The area is designed to encourage movement & collaboration by the introduction of the high table, and less formal meetings in the drop in coffee area with low level seating. The scheme incorporates new bespoke furniture, book case, coffee table, flooring, lighting and bespoke high table and chairs. Select Interiors have also won the re-design of the existing space to introduce some dynamism and colour to what is a fairly monochrome scheme. Works include re-upholstery of the office screens, graphics, colour palette on feature walls and reveals

Bespoke workshop joinery and desking for Tier Consult Ltd Structural Engineers on New Wakefield St. Select Interiors are manufacturing and installing a bespoke large H shaped desk to bridge a difficult space, the joinery is in sprayed white ash with a thickened edge, 4 radial ends, a bridging piece and galvanised steel legs
