Cucumber Recruitment invested in their own building to escape rental pressures and create a workspace tailored to their operations. Select Interiors delivered a full design and build office fit-out that transformed a neglected Edwardian property into modern, efficient recruitment headquarters.

Overview

This three storey double-fronted Edwardian building in Urmston was in poor condition. Damp cellars, collapsing plaster and a structure which was visibly deteriorating meant the space needed a full turnkey solution.

Select Interiors provided a complete office refurbishment in Manchester that aligned with the client’s ambitions to create a long-term base. The project demanded careful planning, strong communication and a flexible approach since hidden issues became visible during strip-out.

Working within the recruitment sector meant creating a workplace that is welcoming, efficient and aligned with their brand, while supporting a busy team and frequent visitors.

Interior Design

The building had been vacant for years, and once demolition began, most of the existing plaster fell away because of issues with water ingress and prolonged humidity. Our office interior design team reassessed the original scope, reviewed budgets and developed solutions that protected the design intent.

Walls and ceilings were fully hacked off, lined and finished. Bespoke joinery and commercial bespoke furniture were refined to work within the updated structure. The result is a contemporary workspace design that blends character with clean, modern lines.

The Office Fit Out

Mechanical, electrical and structural works progressed alongside interior upgrades to future-proof the building. Our commercial interior design team managed the programme from planning to completion, ensuring the refurbished office met the client’s operational needs.

The final install included bespoke banquette seating, acoustic partitions, integrated branding services and ergonomic furniture. Every choice supported it as a comfortable space with an effective workflow, which reflected the company’s identity.

Pure College Stockport, located in Stockport, is a transformative educational space designed to meet the needs of students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). At Select Interiors, we were inspired by the wonderful students and staff at Pure Innovations and worked closely with them to design an environment that is both functional and inspiring.

The Challenge

Designing within a compact 2,500 sqft footprint posed a unique challenge. However, our team of commercial interior designers in Manchester rose to the occasion. The space required a balance of functionality and flexibility, so we created three classrooms, a breakout space, kitchen area, lounge, staff room, informal meeting space with banquette seating and an office, all within this limited area.

The formal meeting space features Crittall glazing and slim-line sliding screens, providing an elegant yet functional touch.

Scope of Works

Full demolition of existing finishes, ceilings and commercial kitchen.
Acoustic partitions, lighting, mechanical and electrical installations, and data connections.
New sanitaryware, bespoke cubicles, and washroom fit-out.
Luxury vinyl and carpet tile flooring.
Acoustic and fire-rated partitions, custom joinery, and bespoke signage.
Acoustic cladding to ensure noise reduction.
Programme duration: 10 weeks, completion & handover.

Interior Design

As with all of our education fit-out projects in Manchester, creating a space that meets the unique needs of the staff and students is paramount. This conversion for serial developer Nigel Rawlings, CEO of Rise Homes & Pure College, presented several challenges, including:

Drainage Issues: The drainage system did not suit the build, so we implemented a solution by breaking out the fire barrier ceilings in the basement and installing a new drainage system complete with fire collars and rodding access.
Noise Transfer: Due to the compact design of the classroom, managing noise transfer and disturbance was crucial. We upgraded the partitions with 15mm Soundbloc, added attenuation into the mechanical system, installed acoustic glazing, and incorporated drop-down acoustic bars with batwing acoustic seals to doors and frames.

The Fit-Out Process

The design process for Pure College Stockport began with a detailed site survey. We then worked closely with the client (Pure College) and the developer to produce 2D CAD layouts, revising them as the design evolved. All drawings were submitted to building control for approval, and we managed the process to completion certificate stage.

Working closely with the landlord and design team, we transformed a shell space into a striking, functional office tailored specifically for a modern creative agency.

The Challenge

The project began as a landlord-led shell and core refurbishment. The brief was to create a highly functional office fit-out while working within the constraints of a heritage building and limited structural load capacity.

One of the key challenges was introducing additional floor space without overloading the existing slab. This required a bespoke structural solution, alongside careful coordination between our commercial interior designers, mechanical contractor and electrical contractor to ensure performance, safety and compliance.

The build and refurbishment phase was completed in just 12 weeks, setting the foundation for a tailored office interior design that aligned with Manchester’s Finest’s brand and working style.

The Challenge

Originally designed by Architect Roger Stephenson, the building featured a strong industrial vernacular, including a King beam arrangement and original Pitch Pine flooring. The brief required us to respect and preserve such historic features while adapting the space for the modern hospitality industry.

We reused, remodelled and relocated bespoke joinery from the client’s previous office.

Custom shelving and storage were built on site using Birch-faced plywood, introducing warmth, durability and a crafted finish to the workspace.
Fitted Storage with Custom Detailing
Large fitted storage units were formed using adapted IKEA wardrobes, enhanced with added gables and pelmets to achieve a fully integrated appearance.
Integrated Power and Industrial Detailing
Raw galvanised metal-clad sockets and containment were installed, alongside satin black sockets integrated within shelving units to provide practical desk power while complementing the industrial character of the space.

Our team worked closely with Orcha’s senior team to develop their initial layout into a fully coordinated working scheme using CAD, 3D design and Revit modelling.

The result is a highly flexible and engaging workplace that supports the needs of a growing team, while allowing additional space for staff who usually work from home but need access to the office when required.

Office Interior Design Solutions for Orcha Health

The interior design scheme used a pastel palette built around nine soft tones across the walls, fabrics and bespoke seating. This gave the office a calm, warm and approachable feel.

The finishes of the floor supported the resimercial (residential meets commercial) theme. We combined durability with a softer, more domestic look. Large-format acoustic warm concrete finishes were used alongside oversized Wharfside Ash in the breakout and café area.

Tarkett carpet tiles in three colours were blended across the floorplate, with junction strips formed into radii to soften the geometry of the space.

Finishing touches included natural waxed oak cladding, bespoke signage, planting, Crittall-style glazing and slim-line sliding screens. These details helped create a polished and cohesive workspace that’s practical, comfortable and full of personality.

As office interior design contractors, our focus was on making sure every finish worked practically while contributing to the overall look and feel of the space.

Working with the design developed by Steve West of studio_néo, Select Interiors transformed this site in central Manchester into a café full of character and with a strong industrial identity. The concrete cellular ceiling and exposed columns were paired with raw steel, ribbed glass, zinc, galvanised finishes and carefully selected vintage lighting. The result is a relaxed, contemporary space that reflects Ezra & Gil’s independent personality while supporting the practical demands of a busy hospitality venue.

Overview

Located on Peter Street, close to St Peter’s Square and Deansgate, the project formed the second Ezra & Gil venue in a planned expansion across the UK.

As an experienced hospitality fit out contractor in Manchester, Select Interiors managed the detailed construction and installation programme required to turn the existing unit into a welcoming café and social space.

The brief included:
● An open and inviting café
● Durable finishes for a busy hospitality setting
● Bespoke metalwork and the fabrication of interiors
● A formal meeting space with Crittall-style glazing
● Slim-line sliding screens for flexibility and privacy
● A bespoke aluminium shopfront

The completed interior combines practical space planning with an honest material palette, creating a venue that feels distinctive, robust and welcoming.

Scope of Works

Our scope of works included:

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations
Structural alterations and associated building works
Diamond sawing and drilling
Installation of a cast concrete slab
Partitioning and plaster soffits
Specialist decorative plaster finishes
Hygienic wall cladding and ceramic wall/ floor tiling
Flooring and decoration
Bespoke metal fabrication

Careful coordination was essential to preserve the exposed architectural features while integrating the services and operational requirements of a modern café.

Interior Design

The interior design celebrates the character of the original structure rather than concealing it. Concrete ceilings and columns provide a strong architectural backdrop, while steel, zinc and galvanised finishes introduce texture and visual depth.

Ribbed glass divides areas without restricting light, helping the café remain open and spacious. Vintage-style lighting softens the harder materials and creates a warmer atmosphere throughout the customer areas.

Every finish was selected to support the Ezra & Gil brand while meeting the demands of a high-footfall hospitality environment.

The Hospitality Fit Out

The fit out required close coordination between structural, mechanical, electrical and finishing trades. Select Interiors managed each stage of the programme, from the early construction work through to specialist finishes and final installation.

Bespoke fabrication played an important role in giving the interior its individual character. Metal elements, glazed screens and the aluminium shopfront were produced and installed to complement the exposed concrete and industrial material palette.

The result demonstrates our approach to hospitality interior design in Manchester: practical planning, carefully considered materials and detailed workmanship brought together within one coordinated fit out service.

The finished venue retains the honesty of its concrete structure while providing a comfortable and inviting setting for customers. Flexible glazed divisions, hard-wearing finishes and carefully integrated services also support the operational needs of the Ezra & Gil team.
